AA advises on baggage cover
Home contents insurance will often cover your holiday suitcase, the AA has counselled.
Separate baggage insurance is therefore often not needed - saving money for homeowners facing costs such as mortgage, credit card and personal loan payments.
Nevertheless, public relations manager at the AA Ian Crowder advised customers to check their policies to see if they were properly covered for possessions overseas.
"If you have cover for personal possessions outside the home, see if it covers you outside the UK - in most cases it will cover [you] anywhere in the world," he said.
"If you have this cover, it will include all your property - baggage, camera, personal effects, et cetera - [and] there is therefore no need to include baggage cover."
Recent research from travel firm Gapyear.com states that no fewer than 25 per cent of young travellers go abroad while uninsured or underinsured - meaning that they face being left out of pocket if their possessions are stolen.
