Brits 'work too much unpaid overtime'
Five million British workers do unpaid overtime, a new report from the TUC has shown.
A gender division was also noted by the trade unions body - which found that more women without children (24.2 per cent) do the unpaid work than any other group.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said that the 'glass ceiling' preventing women from getting the top jobs and equal pay still exists.
"It is hardly surprising that the senior levels of most organisations are male and that the gender pay gap stubbornly persists," he added.
The research was undertaken by the TUC using data from the Office of National Statistics - and also showed that men with children were found to do the highest number of unpaid hours of work time, at 8.3 hours per week.
"On average, fathers who put in unpaid overtime are doing almost an extra day a week," Mr Barber said.
"This can't be good for them, their children or wider society."
