AA gives advice on car insurance

Drivers planning on using their motors abroad should always pre-warn their insurer of their trip, in order to avoid being left out of pocket.

The AA pointed out that many people could find themselves underinsured - and facing a big bill - if they become involved in an incident while overseas.

Currently, those taking trips in Europe might only be covered for third party collisions unless they have taken out a comprehensive car insurance policy.

Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, said: "Before driving outside the UK, check with your car insurer that you will be comprehensively covered.

"If you have car insurance of any sort in Europe, you are automatically covered by law for the minimum legal requirement in the country you are visiting."

Underinsurance among Britons holidaying in Europe could be a widespread 'hidden' problem, if recent figures from the RAC Foundation are accurate.

The group claimed that around three million Britons take their cars abroad via ferry or the Eurotunnel each year.
