Home insurers face earthquake claims
Thousands of home insurance claims are set to ensue from yesterday's earthquake, a provider has suggested.
According to Abbey, around 1,100 calls regarding property or contents damage were received by it within 12 hours of the tremors.
Those who cannot find help from their insurer, however, might take out a personal loan to pay for the damage as an alternative.
Occurring at around 01:00 GMT yesterday, the quake measured 5.3 on the Richter scale - the largest in the UK for 25 years.
Much of England felt its effects - especially in Lincolnshire, where the epicentre was cited.
Tony Beckwith, director of Abbey Insurance, said: "Like the floods of 2007, it is hard to prepare your home for unexpected incidents like this morning's earthquake. These incidents can dramatically affect the structural safety of a home, but with a good insurance policy that offers comprehensive protection for your property, your ability to recover from the unexpected will be a lot easier.
"We would advise anyone affected to check their property, contact the relevant utility company or their insurer if they see anything unusual."
Around 200 minor earthquakes take place each year in the UK, on average.
