Brits pass up green cars for 4x4s, Direct Line says
Future car loans customers for 2008 are more likely to choose a gas-guzzling 'Chelsea tractor' over a fuel-efficient option, research from Direct Line suggests.
In fact, drivers were found to be four times less likely to pick an eco-friendly motor over a 4x4 - despite environmental concerns.
Direct Line also said that 22 per cent of the UK's 30 million motorists were planning to buy a new car over the next year.
As a result, the car loans sector also seems set to experience a boom.
Head of car insurance at Direct Line Tony Chilcott said: "As a nation, we take pride in our cars and with new car registration plates available in the Spring; March is a popular time of year for people to purchase a new one.
"Choosing a more fuel efficient car can limit further damage to the environment, as well as provide financial benefits."
Mr Chilcott also said that rising petrol prices made taking out an energy-efficient car a more attractive financial option for motorists.
