Costly honeymoons on the up
Britons now spend £1,600 on average for their dream wedding holiday, esure said yesterday.
Incredibly, the expense has more than doubled over the last two decades - with the average honeymoon costing just £547 in the 1980s.
Such an expensive trip could mean that, as well as taking out a personal loan to pay for the wedding, an initial loan could be required to pay for the honeymoon.
Unsurprisingly, 75 per cent of poll respondents told esure that they felt "a lot" of pressure to make their holiday perfect.
Head of esure travel insurance Mike Pickard said: "It's interesting to see how trends have changed over the years and how much pressure there is now on using the honeymoon as the ultimate break away.
"With the rise in the number of people cohabiting before they get married nowadays, the honeymoon is seen as a much bigger deal, as it offers the chance to have a dream holiday before couples can truly settle down to married life."
An alternative to taking out a personal loan for honeymoon funding was found by 39 per cent of engaged couples - who said that they would for holiday cash in their wedding lists.
