HMRC launches students tax campaign
Britain's students have been targeted by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) for their latest tax awareness campaign, the body announced yesterday.
The Student Tax Awareness Week runs until Sunday, with the aim of making it clear to those studying at university that they have the same tax obligations as everyone else.
HMRC recently found that 76 per cent of students work in some form of paid employment - with a majority (58 per cent) working part time.
Developing good financial habits is also being promoted by HMRC - which has launched the studenttaxadvice.org.uk website in order to spread the message.
Commenting on the campaign, Jane Frost, a director at HMRC said: "With three quarters of students working it's vital they understand they have the same responsibilities as everyone else for their tax and national insurance.
"This campaign will make dealing with tax easier for students, from National Insurance to tax refunds - getting into good financial habits now will serve them well in the future."
Ama Uzowuru, vice president of welfare at the National Union of Students, added: "We're delighted to be working with HMRC to help students find the right advice whenever and wherever they need it; we encourage students to log on to studenttaxadvice.org.uk and find out about tax."
