Saga maps out 'careless pet' costs

Disaster-prone dogs and clumsy cats are hitting many pet owners where it hurts - in the pocket.

Research from pet insurer Saga revealed yesterday that 14 per cent of total claims were through trips to the vet from "careless" accidents.

Commonly, such accidents can involve animals getting caught up in road accidents, jumping out of trees or cutting themselves while trying to squeeze through small gaps.

People who are not covered by insurance will often have to fund expensive vet care for their four-legged friends through their savings or a loan.

The average cost for treating a cat in a road accident stands at around £700 - although prices vary hugely from case to case and can hit the high four figures.

According to Saga, 71 per cent of pet owners are uninsured in the UK.

Regionally, the highest number of cat mishaps occurred in the Midlands - with over one quarter of insurance claims stemming from carelessness.

Their canine counterparts in the south-east were found to suffer the most accidents.
