Fuel voucher criticised by consumer group

Fuel poverty campaigners have expressed scepticism as to whether the government's proposed 'energy vouchers' to help those on low incomes pay their bills is a good idea.

The BBC reported earlier this week that treasury officials would be meeting with UK energy firms in order to discuss the workability of the plan.

A recent study showing that four million households spend over one tenth of their income on gas and electricity - the official definition of fuel poverty - provided impetus for the policy.

The decision of five of the 'big six' British energy firms to introduce double-digit price rises to their bills has also made the situation more acute.

Reacting to the vouchers plan, director at consumer group Energywatch Adam Scorer told the broadcaster that the government has "recognised [that] it must act now" to tackle fuel poverty.

"Its actions must be focused, proportionate and effective - fuel poor consumers will not thank them for gestures," he added.

The fuel vouchers are expected to be announced in next week's Budget.
