ACPO: More help needed with fraud
The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) has drawn attention to the shockingly wide scale of fraudulent activity in the UK.
According to the organisation, fraud costs the economy £14 billion per year - or around £330 for each member of the total population.
ACPO also said that just six per cent of the 250,000 cases of fraud suffered in Britain would be reported to police - due in part to the serious under-resourcing of specialist fraud squads.
"Fraud is an area of acquisitive crime where clear, cross-Government leadership on crime reduction is required," the organisation said in a statement.
ACPO also recommended that nationwide performance targets for fraud squads be set by the authorities - giving more clarity and direction to their work.
Identity theft is a common form of fraud - which sees people's personal details come into the possession of criminals.
The thief can then take out different types of credit, including a personal loan, on this stolen identity.
