Crackdown on loan sharks in Suffolk
Suffolk is launching a crackdown on loan sharks in the county who prey on vulnerable people in need of good value personal loans but which are actually sold loans with sky-high interest rates.
A loan shark crackdown team from Birmingham City Council will support Suffolk County Council's trading standards officers from Wednesday March 12th, the Loweststoft Journal reports.
Since its inception in 2004 it is thought the team has helped wipe out more than £2 million of debt owed to illegal loan providers by some of the poorest people in Britain.
County councillor and leader of Waveney District Council, Mark Bee, said: "I am delighted that this specialist loan shark team is coming to help in Lowestoft.
"It is a wonderful example of how local government can work together to share experience of bringing these sharks to court to face justice. Birmingham have invaluable expertise in these investigations as well as witness protection and support for victims."
