Insurance premiums to rise after storms

Insurance premiums are likely to rise in the areas affected by the recent storms, homeowners have been warned.

The price comparison website said those assessing damage to their homes and gardens this morning could be hit with a sharp rise in the cost of their premium when they come to renew it.

"The full impact on home and car insurance premiums is not yet fully known," said Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com.

"However, analysis by uSwitch.com indicates that home owners in the south-west affected by the storm damage who go on to make a claim, could take a second hit with home insurance premium increases of up to 40 per cent when they come to renew their policy."

Insurers are still reeling from the £3 billion bill for last summer's floods, which were among the worst in living memory.

The storms over the last 24 hours are set to further dent the balance sheets of leading firms, making some premium increases inevitable.
