Fuel duty rise delayed
Plans to increase fuel duty by 2p per litre are expected to be delayed for six months.
The move, which is set to be announced in the Budget at lunchtime, will offer a concession to hard-pressed motorists.
Private individuals and haulage firms have been hit hard by rising fuel prices, after demand from China and India helped drive oil past the $100 a barrel mark.
Alistair Darling is tipped to delay the increase in what will otherwise be billed as a green Budget.
He is expected to use the tax system to reduce the use of plastic carrier bags at supermarkets and could hit the least fuel-efficient cars with a showroom tax of £2,000.
Vehicles with poor environmental records already cost their owners more to tax and will soon incur a £25 charge for entering the central London congestion charge zone.
