Hotel stays 'becoming more expensive'

Britons funding their holidays and mini-breaks through personal loans have been warned that UK hotels are the most expensive in Europe.

Figures from Hotels.com suggest that the average cost per night in Britain hit £106 last year - a 12 per cent increase over 2006.

A stay in the tourism hotspot of Bath was revealed to be the most expensive, with rooms costing £117.

London was close behind on £115, with Oxford on £113.

However, staying in Coventry was found to be the cheapest option by Hotels.com, with a room costing just £57.

Senior vice president at the online booking site David Roche said: "While Bath's combination of high visitor levels and luxury hotels means that it retains its place as the most expensive city in the UK, our data shows that Oxford and London are catching up fast."

He added: "It’s still possible to find competitively priced accommodation, but the combination of strong demand and limited supply is making this more difficult."
