TUC: Women still paid less than men
Unequal workplace pay between men and women has been criticised by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
The organisation said that females earn 3.3 per cent less in their 20s - and that this figure grows to 22.8 per cent by their 40s.
Mothers taking time out to care for their children contributes to the growing total, the TUC said.
This pay disparity leaves women less well-equipped to pay their bills, to take out credit or to pay off loans.
Brendan Barber, the TUC general secretary, commented: "We all expect our wages to increase as our careers progress, but women's wages start to stagnate as early as their 30s and many are paying an unacceptable penalty simply for having children."
It was also claimed that the "wastage" of women's skills in the workplace costs the economy as a whole £11 billion per year.
