esure: Motorists are turning green
Many motorists are planning to swap their gas guzzlers for a more environmentally-friendly vehicle, a new poll from esure has revealed.
According to the survey, 42 per cent of people plan their next car purchase - which will often be funded by a personal loan or a car loan - to be a low-emitting model such as a hybrid.
Moreover, nine per cent of energy-conscious Britons said that they were putting off buying a new car due to their global warming fears.
News of the poll comes in the same week as the government's new 'showroom tax' for gas guzzlers was revealed.
Under the proposals, a one-off £950 charge will be levied on motorists buying any car that emits over 255g of carbon per kilometre.
Head of risk and underwriting at esure Mike Pickard commented: "As the government continues to incentivise the nation to opt for clean, green vehicles and shun uneconomical 4x4s and gas guzzling cars by introducing a substantial 'showroom tax', attitudes amongst drivers are changing.
"British drivers appear to have seen the 'green' light and are shifting their car buying habits and aspirations to fit with the current, more eco-friendly society."
