RAC: Young festivalgoers should watch out for road risks
People driving to music festivals this summer should be aware of the dangers drug and alcohol consumption poses to drivers.
The RAC said yesterday that the safest policy for this group of festival-goers was to abstain completely from intoxicants.
Government figures suggest that around six per cent of total road casualties in the UK were caused by drink or drug driving.
RAC spokesman Erik Nelson commented: "Drivers need to understand the risks and the dangers for themselves and for others that they would present behind the wheel if they are under the influence."
He added: "Our recommendation is always abstinence is always the best policy. If you want to be in control of the vehicle, abstain."
The comments follow a statement from the British Medical Association last month expressing concern at the impact of drug use on drivers.
According to the association, the government should now launch a public information campaign on the issue in order to raise awareness on the dangers.
