Homeowners threatened by bailiffs when they fall behind on their loan repayments are to gain greater government protection, the justice minister said yesterday.

Maria Eagle announced that a new independent regulator for the agents, which would require them to receive more training and sit exams.

The new policy announcement followed the publication of a consultation paper on the issue, the BBC reports.

Bailiffs' representatives the Enforcement Services Association welcomed the announcement, but said that the profession "should not be condemned" due to the actions of an unscrupulous minority.

"The Association and its membership continues to work for higher standards within the industry," it added.

"[We have] given clear and consistent support to the proposals for a regulatory/licensing regime."ADNFCR-1574-ID-18516768-ADNFCR
