Car insurance concerns as drivers 'don't know overseas rules'
Motorists are generally unaware of the "minefield" of driving regulations which come into effect abroad, a new survey has found.
The poll suggests that 7.2 million drivers are unaware of their car insurance status in other European countries - despite the varying road rules of different member states.
In turn, this can lead to the motorists being left out of pocket if they become involved in an incident they are unknowingly not covered for - a financial shortfall that might need to be financed by a further unsecured loan.
According to uSwitch, which carried out the research, around three million Britons are planning to take their cars abroad
Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at the website, said: "It isn't only sun cream protection that holidaymakers need to worry about when driving abroad this year - motorists must also spend some time examining the protection offered by their car insurance provider.
"Consumers should look at the level of cover on offer and watch out for any restrictive clauses as to the number of consecutive days a car can be driven abroad before the driver must return to the UK."
