Garden-grabbing an 'environmental disaster'
'Garden-grabbing' - the usage of big gardens in order to build multiple homes - represents an environmental disaster, a Tory MP has claimed.
Redeveloping the gardens have been previously passed by councils aiming to hit tough government-imposed homebuilding targets, the Daily Mail reports.
Such developments can be seen as a way of making home loans more affordable by improving overall supply.
However, Caroline Spelman MP said that the impact of garden-grabbing had been "disastrous".
She added: "Gardens are a valuable source of bio-diversity, they are a haven for wildlife and they play a critical role in getting the balance right between the built and natural environment.
"Gardens being concreted over is leaving a malign environmental legacy."
Ms Spelman made the comments while introducing the new Land Use (Garden Protection) Bill to parliament, proposed legislation which aims to outlaw garden-grabbing in the UK.
