ICO: Shred your documents and vary your passwords
Consumers must take steps to protect their personal details in order to prevent credit card fraud, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said yesterday.
The authority is advising that bank and credit card statements should be thoroughly checked for suspicious activity.
Varying access passwords to online banking and shredding personal details documents also came highly recommended.
Deputy commissioner at the ICO David Smith said: "Shred your documents, protect your home computer by making sure its virus protected.
"Although it's hard, try and use different passwords and pin numbers. Don't use the same one all the time, or something obvious, like your pet's name."
The ICO comments came in the wake of research from Fellowes - which showed that 97 per cent of the contents of British rubbish bins contained at least two items potentially useful to identity thieves.
