Credit cards finance a quarter of dates

British men spend £7.5 billion more than women on dating and 25 per cent of them put the bill on their credit cards, research has shown.

The survey by National Savings and Investments (NS&I) revealed that up to 40 per cent of the men questioned believed the costs of the date should fall on them.

Nearly 20 per cent of women are in agreement with this and expect men to foot the bill.

Men hope to spend approximately £20 on a date but women doubled this figure to over £40. Some 75 per cent of male respondents revealed they spent beyond their means.

Dan Harkins, senior savings strategist at NS&I, said: "There is no doubt that dating costs a lot, and many people in Britain need to think beyond impressing with wit and charm and also plan their finances."

"However it is clear that men need to keep at least a few of their thoughts on money when they're trying to impress on a date, so they don't end up overspending or being caught short of cash."

Research last year from Chiltern Debt Management showed that men are 20 per cent more in debt than women.
