Advice given on no-claims 'mirroring'

Start Loan Application

Drivers should try to pick a car insurance firm that lets them "mirror" their no claims discount in order to save money, Moneysupermarket.com has suggested.

According to analysis from the financial website, five of the top ten UK insurance groups do not currently allow drivers to use their no claims discount when purchasing a second vehicle.

Research also suggests that not being able to "mirror" in this way adds 67 per cent to premiums - money that could be spent paying off an unsecured loan or car loan taken out to fund the purchase in the first place.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at the website, said: "It is a little known fact that many insurers now allow you to mirror your no claims discount from one car to the next.

"The most common question on our forums is 'why can't I use my no claims discount on two cars?' It is a good question and thankfully one that more and more insurers are starting to wake up to."

He added: "If you are thinking of having more than one car in your household, it is prudent to choose an insurer that allows you to make the most of your [no claims discount]."
