'Hidden cost' of BBC's iPlayer for broadband users
The BBC's hugely popular 'free' download service iPlayer can actually carry a hidden cost, Neil Armstrong, marketing director of internet provider PlusNet, told the Daily Mail.
This is because people may inadvertently exceed the download limits of their internet packages through using the service.
Approximately 2.2 million people have logged onto iPlayer since its launch three months ago, causing traffic from the site to rise by more than five per cent, explained Mr Armstrong.
Most internet providers impose a download limit on internet packages and exceeding those limits can mean being charged with an additional fee.
PlusNet levy a charge of 75p per extra gigabyte downloaded by users, and Mr Armstrong says that it is important consumers are aware of the potential costs of using iPlayer.
"One episode of EastEnders is a third of a gigabyte, so you hit the limit very quickly and then the surprise comes," explained Armstrong.
Other internet service providers may not charge but instead choose to slow down speeds or cut of their service entirely for frequent users.
