Sandwich chain goes contactless
A new milestone in contactless payments - which might eventually see the pre-pay cards replacing cash in many shops - was marked by Barclaycard yesterday.
The comments were made as sandwich chain EAT unveiled its fully integrated contactless payment system - the first retailer to do so in the UK.
Under the new scheme, customers paying under £10 can touch their Visa Paywave or MasterCard Paypass cards onto special readers, rather than hand over cash, in order to buy goods.
This process, considerably quicker for customers to use than chip and PIN, is anticipated to spread rapidly among other retailers in future.
Head of contactless at Barclaycard James McDonald said: "The technology can process payments in less than half a second, enabling retailers to serve more customers and reduce queues at busy times.
"This is good for retailers and good for customers."
