Fraud victims research released

The "typical victim" of credit card fraud has been analysed by scam prevention service Cifas.

According to the body, the average male victim will be aged 46 - with the average female slightly younger at 43.

Cifas also said that forty-somethings are targeted by fraudsters because they are generally more prosperous than younger people - as well as being more likely to pay off their credit cards.

Chief executive Peter Hurst said: "While our research into fraudsters revealed that the typical fraudster seems to be getting younger, this displays a quite different picture.

"Large debts are a way of life for young people: this may discourage fraudsters from stealing an identity of someone who may not be granted the facility the fraudster seeks anyway."

He added: "As a result, those in their forties - who may be seen as more resource rich and burden light - become a particular niche group to exploit."
