Advice given on car tax hike

Government-imposed increases to car tax will hit UK drivers in the pocket, EurotaxGlass's has pointed out.

Many used cars will be affected by the 98 per cent increase - although the degree of extra costs will vary depending on how old the vehicle is and how much carbon it emits.

According to EurotaxGlass's, those cars registered between 2001 and 2006, which emit more than 226g of carbon per kilometre, will be worst affected.

This group will see costs of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) increase from £210 to a minimum of £415 when the new legislation comes into effect next year.

"The latest rises in VED will increasingly be viewed as an integral part of overall rises in motoring costs for high polluting cars, putting their values under further pressure," managing editor at EurotaxGlass's Adrian Rushmore said.

"Such a sharp rise in VED could well have implications for the used car market in the coming months and years, but much will depend on customers' understanding of the changes."

Accordingly, buyers looking to pay off debt for car loans quicker are advised to buy vehicles which emit less carbon.
