Immigration 'not providing benefits'

The economy is seeing "little or no" benefit from increased immigration, a new House of Lords report has claimed.

According to the study, extra wealth created by migrants has been cancelled out by their negative impact on low-skilled UK workers.

However, the government has expressed scepticism about the findings - with minister Liam Byrne saying that immigrants have added £6 billion to the economy.

Inquiry chairman Lord Wakeham said: "Looking to the future, if you have got that increase in numbers and you haven't got any economic benefit from it, you have got to ask yourself, is that a wise thing to do?

"That is why we want the government to look at it."

According to the report, 591,000 people arrived to live in the UK for a year or more in 2006.

This is a record amount, beating the previous high - set in 2005 - by 5,000.
