Green tariffs 'save people money as well as cutting carbon'

Switching gas and electricity provider not only saves consumers money - it can help the environment, too.

According to Moneysupermarket.com, swapping to cheaper "green tariffs" offered by power firms can save householders £1.2 billion.

What's more, making the switch would also reduce overall carbon emissions by 20 million tonnes - a three per cent cut in the national total.

Given that the government is committed to cutting carbon by 20 per cent before 2020 - and by 60 per cent for 2050 - the switchers can also be satisfied that they are helping others, as well as themselves.

Green tariffs currently on sale include Scottish Power's Green Energy H2O and npower's National Trust.

Utilities manager at Moneysupermarket.com, Scott Byrom, said: "I would hope the extra prospect of playing a major role in reducing global warming - on top of saving money - might be the extra prod that people need.

"If just one medium user of electricity in Southampton still on their original electricity tariff swapped to Scottish Power’s H2O tariff they would save £155 and reduce carbon emissions by 1.4 tonnes."
