Safeguard Insurance advises on caravans
People planning to go on a caravan holiday must make sure that they take out adequate insurance protection, Safeguard Insurance has said.
Last year's flooding in England - which has cost insurers an estimated £3 billion in claims - was also cited by the firm as a big potential threat for caravanners.
Rita Sadler, of Safeguard Insurance, said: "Most policies cover flood, although a site that is prone to flooding or has recently flooded should be referred to your insurer.
"I'm a caravanner. There's no way I would go, for instance, putting my caravan at the side of the river that I knew was prone to flooding. That's the advice that we give to most motor caravanners - don't get yourself into difficulty."
Ms Sadler added that insuring caravans, even though not mandatory, was advisable.
"I wouldn't want to think that I'd spent a lot of money on a caravan and then it goes up in flames or it's stolen," she said.
Figures from the Caravan Club show that around 19 per cent of people take caravan holidays.
What's more, 57,000 new members joined the body last year - a sign of the holidays' growing popularity.
