Zurich: Home insurance should be simpler
Low-income Britons should not be excluded from taking out home insurance, Zurich Municipal said yesterday.
To this end, the insurer has launched a new home product for tenants who would not otherwise purchase cover.
In a bid to simplify the application process, Zurich Municipal says that the product's insurance premiums are predicated on the number of bedrooms a property has.
This removes the need for people to calculate a value for their home contents - a significant complicating factor that has put many off taking out the insurance.
The cover can also be paid for weekly in cash - and can be purchased over the phone.
Tom Shewry, head of housing at Zurich Municipal, said: "Financial concerns and the fact that insurance products are often seen as complicated and difficult to understand are reflected in poor adoption of these schemes.
"We have worked hard to increase access for those least able to replace their possessions should the worst happen and we look forward to working closely with our customers to improve take up."
