CIOT issues adviser advice

Consumers looking for tax guidance should make sure that their adviser is fully qualified and accredited, the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) said yesterday.

Working out how much tax should be paid can be a complex process for some groups, such as the self-employed - meaning that speaking to a tax adviser is necessary.

This issue has become particularly acute recently - with figures from the Office for National Statistics showing that there has been "a growth" in self-employment recently.

Moreover, several important changes to the UK tax system will also go into effect as the new financial year begins this Sunday - including reforms of income tax, inheritance tax and capital gains.

John Whiting at CIOT said: "If you want tax advice, you should always go to a properly qualified tax adviser.

"If you want to build an extension on your house you will look around to get recommendations - it's the same process when looking for a tax adviser. Make sure that you get an adviser you can trust."
