Insurer advises 'spring clean' for homeowners

As the weather begins to warm and the evenings get longer, Legal & General issued tips today for an insurance "spring clean" among consumers.

The home insurance provider said that policyholders should undertake simple security checks in order to check that their property is not vulnerable to burglars.

Checking alarms, locks and other safety systems came highly recommended from Legal & General - which also released figures showing striking consumer apathy over security.

The research revealed that just 30 per cent of people have a burglar alarm at home - and over half of those who do own one have "never" checked it to see that it is still working.

Head of technical services at Legal & General, Elaine Parkes, said: "Customers are required to take reasonable steps to safeguard their property and contents against loss or damage as part of the terms of their household insurance cover."

The insurance expert also had advice for those planning upgrades of their home - which are often paid for by a secured homeowner loan or a personal loan.

She added: "If you’re planning more than a 'spring clean', such as major home improvements then it's worthwhile checking with your insurer beforehand to see if restrictions will apply to your cover."
