Baggage worries 'can be allayed by insurance'
Consumers need not be left out of pocket due to losing their baggage at the airport, data firm Defaqto said today.
This is because many travel insurance policies provide financial recompense for lost luggage - although this cover was found to be by no means universal.
Defaqto insurance consultant Mike Powell said: "With the problems that have occurred with the opening of Terminal 5 and the fact that there has been widespread reports in the media of people not being able to collect their luggage and flights being cancelled or delayed, consumers do not always consider what cover is provided by their travel insurance policy for these types of eventualities.
"It is therefore important to check what is provided by a travel insurance policy before purchasing cover."
According to a study conducted by the company, 14 per cent of single trip insurance policies do not provide the protection - and 40 per cent only cover to a value of up to £100.
The comments were made in the wake of the baggage crisis at Heathrow's new Teminal 5 - which left as many as 15,000 customers stranded without their luggage due to systems failures.
