Across the board road safety improvements 'needed'

Car insurance customers should not be lured into thinking that women are entirely safe drivers, Confused.com said yesterday.

Females generally pay much less for their car cover than males do, due to their representing a much higher risk for insurers.

Previous research from Confused.com has shown that 2.3 million men were convicted for driving offences last year, compared with just 920,000 women.

However, this should not lead people to believe that females are "whiter than white," managing director at the website Debra Williams commented.

"The problem needs to be tackled generally and across the board, with both men and women being increasingly taken to task for avoidable offences," she said.

Official government figures for 2006 show that just over 250,000 people in the UK were injured in road accidents.
