B&Q advises on home improvements

Advice on boosting the value of a property - vital for those looking to remortgage or sell their home - has been offered by B&Q.

The DIY retailer advised homeowners to add a conservatory to their properties, as this was a good way of justifying a higher asking price.

Research from Halifax undertaken last year shows that home improvements have become something of a national craze in the UK - with 58 per cent of Britons being found to have undertaken some kind of upgrade over the previous 12 months.

A B&Q spokesperson added: "Most home improvements will enhance the resale value of your home, but some are more profitable than others.

"Installing a kitchen, bathroom or conservatory is likely to pay for itself in added market value."

She added: "Don’t rip out period features such as fireplaces, use textured plaster or woodchip to cover uneven walls, create windowless rooms, put double glazing that doesn’t open or economise by living with dated wallpaper or furnishings."
